Important large Russian chandelier with 18 candleholders, made ca 1790
This is a masterpiece, a unique piece. The Russians were masters of coloured glass and designed their chandeliers in a wonderful way at the end of the 18th c.
The central stem of this chandelier is formed of blown turquoise coloured glass pieces stacked upon each other. The largest pieces together depicts an amphora shaped urn. The metal frame is made of brass and bronze that is gilt. The quality and condition of the the gilding is very good.
The ring of the chandelier is cast in bronze that is gilt. This is somewhat unusual since most chandeliers of this period has rings made of brass plate. Also here the quality of this chandelier stands out both regarding the cast and the chasing.
It has 18 candle holders which makes it wide and very impressive.
The candleholders have a typical Russian flower shape.
All crystals are period with the chandelier.
