18th Century Gustavian Gilt Bronze and White Marble clock signed Adamson
A Gustavian gilt bronze and white marble table clock in lyre shaped case with white enamel dial and black Roman and Arabic numerals. Signed Adamsson a Paris. Louis XVI period. Late 18th century. This clock is in a very nice condition including the gilding and in working order. It was rare at the time to be a foreigner and succeed as a clockmaker in Paris and furthermore also to be appointed by the Royal court. There are examples of Adamsons work in the Swedish Royal collections.
The Swedish-born clockmaker Gustav Adolph Adamson was born in Karlskrona 1746. In 1765 he was an apprenticed clockmaker in Stockholm. In 1773 he moved to Paris and in 1791 he was appointed as clockmaker to the royal court.
