Dimensions: Height 105 cm (42 inches) x Width 74 cm (30 inches)

A magnificent Swedish Empire chandelier in gilt brass, gilt bronze and cut glass, dating to circa 1810. The chandelier is of monumental basket form, suspended beneath an elegantly domed superstructure draped with faceted crystal chains that descend to a broad circular frame. The richly ornamented gilt-brass framework is lavishly hung with hand-cut crystal drops and spear prisms, creating a brilliant play of light and reflection.

A particularly unusual feature is the set of candle arms terminating in finely cast eagle heads, each supporting a flame-shaped candle holder. The eagle, one of the defining emblems of the Empire style, symbolised power, authority and classical virtue, while the flame-form nozzles introduce an elegant sculptural contrast. The frame is further enriched with finely chased gilt-bronze mounts, including anthemia, lion masks and scrolling foliage.

Inspired by the neoclassical ideals that spread across Europe during the early nineteenth century, Swedish Empire chandeliers combined refined architectural design with exceptional craftsmanship. Examples of this quality were commissioned for aristocratic residences, manor houses and distinguished public interiors, where their crystal ornament transformed candlelight into a dazzling display.

An impressive and historically significant chandelier, distinguished by its rare eagle-head candle arms, exceptional quality of casting and beautifully preserved crystal ornament.
