Severin Nilson (1846–1918)
Landscape with Coastal Path
Oil on panel. Signed lower left.

A peaceful coastal landscape by the Swedish painter Severin Nilson, depicting a winding path leading through rocky grassland towards the sea beneath a broad, cloud-filled sky. Executed with confident, expressive brushwork, the painting captures the shifting Nordic light and the quiet beauty of the west coast countryside. The composition naturally draws the eye along the path, while the soft blue horizon contrasts with the vibrant greens of the foreground, creating both depth and atmosphere.

Born in Halland, Severin Nilson was particularly admired for his landscapes, portraits and genre scenes inspired by rural Swedish life. Trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm before continuing his studies in Paris under Léon Bonnat, he combined academic skill with a fresh, naturalistic approach to painting. Alongside his artistic career, he became one of Sweden's earliest documentary photographers, recording traditional rural life in his native Halland. Today his works are represented in the collections of the Nationalmuseum, Hallands Konstmuseum and several other Swedish museums.
