A Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Moscow, 1873. Painted on a wooden panel and set beneath an exquisitely chased silver oklad (riza), the icon combines devotional imagery with the exceptional silversmithing for which nineteenth-century Moscow workshops were renowned.
Saint Nicholas is portrayed in the traditional manner, raising his right hand in blessing while holding the Gospel in his left. The silver cover leaves only the saint's face and hand visible, its richly engraved surface decorated with geometric, floral and foliate motifs that frame the composition and enhance the spiritual presence of the icon. The finely chased halo and vestments demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of Russian ecclesiastical silver.
The silver oklad bears Moscow assay marks together with the date 1873, confirming its origin during one of the most accomplished periods of Russian icon production. Icons of this quality were created both as objects of private devotion and as treasured family heirlooms, uniting sacred painting with the artistry of the silversmith.
A beautiful example of nineteenth-century Russian religious art, combining historical significance, devotional character and outstanding craftsmanship.
