A fine European figure of Minerva, dating from the second half of the 19th century and probably of French origin. The Roman goddess of wisdom and warfare is depicted standing in classical drapery, holding a long spear in her raised hand. The figure is finely carved throughout, with particularly delicate treatment of the facial features, hands and deeply folded drapery. Contrasting metal details form Minerva’s helmet and distinctive scale-patterned aegis, adding depth and character to the composition.
The figure is raised on an exceptionally well-made solid mahogany pedestal, with a finely fluted column, moulded circular base and square plinth. The quality and proportions of the pedestal suggest that it was specifically made for the sculpture and forms an integral part of its presentation.
A beautifully executed and unusual example of late 19th-century European classical sculpture.
