A bronze reproduction of the famous Venus de Badalona, a Roman sculpture dating from the 1st century AD and one of the most celebrated archaeological discoveries in Badalona, near Barcelona, Spain.
The original marble sculpture, discovered in 1934 in the ancient Roman city of Baetulo, depicts Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Today, it is preserved in the Museu de Badalona and has become an important symbol of the city.
This bronze version faithfully reproduces the fragmentary female nude torso, with its softly modelled curves, missing head and arms, and traces of the original sculptural details. The bronze has a warm brown patina and is mounted on a square black marble base.
The base bears the coat of arms of Badalona and a commemorative plaque recording its presentation by the City Council of Badalona to Karl-Anders Wollter, Swedish Ambassador to Spain, on 27 November 1986.
