A Chinese export lacquer box dating from the late 18th century, circa 1790–1800. Of elongated rectangular form with a gently curved lid, the box is made of wood and finished in black lacquer, with a red lacquered interior.
The lid is finely decorated in gold and red with a composition of flowers and traditional Chinese objects, related to the Hundred Antiques (Baigu) tradition. Such arrangements of vessels, scholarly objects and flowers were associated with learning, refinement and cultivated taste in Chinese art. The decoration is framed by a delicate gilt border.
Made during the Qing dynasty, the box belongs to the tradition of Chinese lacquerware produced at a time when such objects were increasingly exported to Europe. Its restrained decoration differs from the more densely gilded Canton export lacquer that became fashionable during the 19th century.
The surface retains an attractive aged character, with wear and losses consistent with its age.
