A finely crafted Indian miniature sabre-form letter opener, dating from the second half of the 19th century. Made of steel, it follows the elegant curved form of a traditional Indian sabre, with a hooked blade, simple crossguard and rounded handle. The surface is richly engraved throughout with intricate scrolling and foliate decoration, highlighted by small gold-inlaid floral and star-shaped motifs. Despite its miniature scale, the piece is carefully finished and closely follows the character of a full-sized weapon. An unusual and decorative example of late 19th-century Indian metalwork.
