Japanese miniature Oni mask, Meiji period, late 19th century. Made from a lightweight papier-mâché or composition material with a lacquered and painted surface. The expressive face is modelled with small horns, prominent fangs and inset eyes, with traces of applied hair remaining around the face. The reddish-brown lacquer has considerable losses, revealing the lighter material beneath and giving the mask a strongly aged character. The interior is finished in black lacquer.
