A charming and unusual pair of antique Danish silver salt cellars made by silversmith Wilhelm Christensen in Copenhagen in 1884.
Each salt cellar features a distinctive triangular shape, resting on three polished spherical feet. The stepped sides are decorated with an intricate band of scrolling foliage and ornamental detailing, contrasting with the smooth, polished triangular upper surface. At the centre is a circular recessed bowl for holding salt.
The combination of geometric form and elaborate decoration gives these salt cellars a particularly appealing appearance, reflecting the craftsmanship of late 19th-century Danish silverwork.
Both pieces are hallmarked underneath with the Copenhagen three-tower mark dated 1884, the maker's mark WC and the assay master's mark attributed to Simon Groth, who served as Copenhagen's assay master from 1863 to 1904.
The silver retains an attractive patina, with darker areas highlighting the decorative details.
